We’ve chosen to illustrate our site with line-drawings and paintings, rather than with glossy, corporate-style pictures or beautiful photography. In part, we’ve wanted to find a different approach from many consultancies, and also because we simply like them, this is our way of pointing to a different sort of interaction. A picture may be, after all, another sort of resource. And if we enter fully into the different worlds of each artist, we find that they bring alive something new and unexpected; qualities and faculties which we can draw upon when we interact creatively in our lives, with ourselves, with other people and our tasks.
Most of the paintings on this site are by Swiss modernist painter Paul Klee (1879-1940). A full list of the paintings used on the site can be found at the bottom of this page
‘The Dream’ by French Post-Impressionist painter Henri Rousseau (1844-1920) appears on our page: Dreams.
The painting on our page Building Confidence is by the contemporary artist, Frances Broomfield: Henri Rousseau’s Dream Garden (1995). We are currently seeking permission to use this work.
Most of the line-drawings are by the Victorian artist and ‘nonsense’ poet Edward Lear (1812-1888), drawn from the following compilations:
Lear, Edward. [1862] A Book of Nonsense. London: Routledge, Warne and Routledge.
- [ca.1870] Lear’s Shilling Book of Nonsense. London: Frederick Warne.
- [1872] More Nonsense, Pictures, Rhymes, Botany, etc. London: R. J. Bush.
- [1888] Nonsense Botany, and Nonsense Alphabets. London, New York : Frederick Warne & Co.
- [1892] The Duck and the Kangaroo. London, New York: Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd.
- [1952] A Nonsense Alphabet. London: H.M. Stationery Off., 1952 (Dorchester: Henry Ling Limited, The Dorset Press) (1968 printing).
- [1953] Teapots and Quails, and Other New Nonsenses. Edited and introduced by Angus Davidson and Philip Hofer. London: J Murray.
Alderson, Brian. [1975]. A Book of Bosh. Harmondsworth: Kestrel books, published by Penguin Books Ltd. (A useful modern edition of many of Lear’s poems, pictures.)
A single line-drawing by Burne-Jones (1833-1898) appears on our Suggested Reading page, illustrating ‘William Morris reading poetry to Burne-Jones’ from: collections vam.ac.uk
Ox-herding Pictures
The line-drawings on the Mindfulness pages are drawn from a famous set of ten ‘Oxherding Pictures’, and are a classic metaphor for training the mind in meditation. These paintings are by Yokoo Tatsuhiko. For the whole set, see: sanbo-zen.org
